About Us

Welcome to Mountain Empire Federal Credit Union! Established in 1952, we are a not-for-profit financial cooperative, dedicated to providing our members with the highest level of financial services. Strong and growing, we offer excellent borrowing and savings programs and are dedicated to educating people to be wise consumers and smart money managers.

People who join a credit union are called members and they are the institution's owners, Instead of paying dividends to a group of stockholders, earnings are returned to members in the form of lower rates and fees, higher savings account rates and expanded services. MEFCU membership is a great benefit that will help you save money.

Mission & History
In 1952 Mountain Empire FCU was organized because a handful of people at Brunswick Corporation believed in an idea and were willing to bring to reality a cooperative financial institution. Now, over 54 years later, we have a state-of-the-art facility, plans for additional branches and over 4,000 members.

Our mission is to be your primary financial institution, promoting thrift and creating a source of credit for our members.

Member Eligibility

Who Can Join?

Credit unions can only serve specific groups of people, known as their field of membership. Members are made up of people who share something in common, such as where they live or work–a common bond. Mountain Empire FCU is a community credit union serving Smyth, Wythe, and Washington Counties. Anyone who lives, works, attends school, worships, or volunteers in these counties is eligible to join.

That's the reason we call our patrons "members", not customers. Serving members is the credit union's sole commitment.

If you are an immediate relative or permanent household member of an existing MEFCU member, you are also eligible to join. (An immediate relative is defined as spouse, child, parent, sibling, grandparent, or grandchild. A household member is someone living in the same residence and participating in maintenance of the household.)

The offer of membership also extends to all business and legal entities within our area.

How to Join?

Joining is as simple as depositing $25.00 into your MEFCU savings account. This is your "share" in the credit union. Your share makes you a member/owner and gives you the right to vote for your volunteer Board of Directors. This money will stay in your saving account as long as you are a member. As a member you have access to all of our products and services.

Once a Member, Always a Member

After you join MEFCU, you're invited to remain a member for life–even if you change jobs, relocate or retire. You and your family will always have full access to our complete menu of financial products and services.

Board Members
The volunteer Board of Directors is democratically elected by the membership at its Annual Meeting, and each member is entitled to one vote regardless of the amount he has on deposit. The Board of Directors selects members to be on the Supervisory Committee, which acts as internal auditor.
